On February 23, 2014, I got the Completionist's Cape in Runescape.
For those of you who have no idea what that is, it's basically an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink achievement for the online game that I've played for about 9 years.
The next day, I logged onto Runescape...and realized there really wasn't a damn thing I wanted to do. Nothing that I was working towards or trying to get. I did player-owned ports and my daily challenge, and logged out.
Several weeks later, I find it hard to spend more than an hour at a time on the game. I do player-owned ports, the daily challenge, and check out any updates that may have happened.
It's an odd feeling.
I've gone through periods where my Runescape playing has dropped to an half-hour or less per day, but never has there been a time where I wasn't working towards something.
And it's okay.*
On the other hand, I'm suddenly a bit obsessed about learning French. I'm spending a lot more time trying to learn it than I ever thought I could stand to.
I think a major key for my learning is finding what works for my learning style.
I probably spend around two hours, total, spread throughout the day, actively using sites such as Memrise and Duolingo to try to learn more. But then I listen to music and podcasts in French, read articles, and check out new resources.
I set out to learn a language this year. This year is French.
If I can spend as much time on French that I have on Runescape, or even League of Legends, I think I'll reach a decent level of fluency by the end of the year.
Anyways, I made this post to mention that I've compiled a page of most of my links on learning French. Some could be applied to other languages as well. If someone finds it helpful, cool.
Life is short. Do what makes you happy.**

*There is also an everything-with-the-kitchen-sink achievement. But I'm not prepared to do 4000 games of Castle Wars (at 20 minutes each) for it. Yet.
**with the usual caveat of Don't Be an Asshole, don't inflict pain and death on people, etc etc etc
